INTRODUCTION:Power factor is a measurement of electrical system efﬁciency. Inductive Load functions on principles of two energies. Active Energy for Action (KW), and Reactive Energy for Reaction (KVAr). KW + KVAr = KVA (This is total energy). Both these energies are drawn from Utility lines. Capacitor haves capability to provide Reactive energy, and installation of appropiate KVAr Capacitor would result in in-house KVAr generation. Many utilities have a power factor (KW/KVA) penalty built into their rate structure to penalize users with a low power factor reading in their electrical system. To improve this power factor, the most common solution is to install a KVAr Capacitor system.
It is well known fact that as current ﬂows through the conductor, the conductors heat up due to resistance in the conductor. This heating is power loss which is proportional to current (Power Loss=I*I*R). In normal electrical distribution systems, the conductor loss can account for up to six percent (6%) of the total load. When a capacitor system is installed in a distribution system to improve system power factor, it also reduces the current magnitude ﬂowing through the conductor and transformer. Hence, the power loss is reduced.That means it reduces KWh units also.
